MSD were awarded a package of works on the £250 million Stafford Area Improvements Programme – the first programme of its type the UK to be delivered as a ‘pure alliance’.

Making up the Alliance were Network Rail, Laing O’Rourke, Volker and Atkins Rail.

Project Scope

The aim of the project was to boost capacity and reliability on the West Coast Main Line.

Works include line speed improvements between Crewe and Norton Bridge (now complete) and the wholesale re-signalling of Stafford and the surrounding area. Six miles of new railway will also be constructed at Norton Bridge including a fly-over which will help to provide a faster more reliable rail service.
